A spokesperson for Russian President Dmitri Peskow has stated that he is not aware of any information that would confirm the US’s claims of a potential peace in Ukraine this week. In response to a relevant question, the spokesperson said, “I think there will be some clarifications from my colleague in Washington. I don’t have that information yet.”
Earlier, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, announced that US President Donald Trump is “very optimistic” that the conflict can be ended this week. Leavitt added that the national security adviser, Mike Waltz, will work around the clock this weekend to achieve a settlement.
Following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump expressed support for Putin’s stance that the conflict was caused by Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, a view that the former US President Joe Biden did not rule out.
Later, a Republican commentator on Fox News Radio stated that, in his opinion, while Russia is responsible for the start of hostilities, it could have been easily prevented. Trump believes that both Selenskij and Biden “said the wrong things” and failed to stop the conflict.
Peskov viewed Trump’s statements as an attempt by the US to understand the causes of the conflict in Ukraine and expressed hope that Washington would “fully” analyze the issue, which would benefit the efforts to resolve the conflict.
Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. On February 18, the Russian and US delegations met in Riyadh, after which Trump announced that he had become “much more optimistic” about the possibility of an agreement. He also stated that the Russian and Ukrainian presidents should meet to end the fighting.
