Merz's Blockade Puts Democracy at Risk!

German political party leaders discuss potential government formation following the federal election.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is pushing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to engage in talks for a government coalition, according to AfD leader Alice Weidel. Weidel stated in a press conference on Monday that the voter desires a center-right government and it ultimately depends on the CDU whether they will make this a reality.

Currently, however, it does not seem likely, as Friedrich Merz has reportedly maintained his stance against the AfD. Weidel described this stance as undemocratic, saying that it is unacceptable to exclude millions of voters in principle. The responsibility lies with the CDU to find a way around this, she added.

It is expected that a CDU and CSU coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) would not be able to implement the promises made to their own voters, according to Weidel’s statement.
