Top Deputy to Resign if Party Crashes Out of Parliament

A senior official of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), Wolfgang Kubicki, has stated that he will step down from his leadership position in the event of the party’s failure to clear the five percent threshold in the upcoming election.

In an interview with the Welt newspaper, Kubicki said, “I will tell my party: I take on a part of the responsibility.” He also added, “I was significantly involved in the election campaign leadership and I am not the one who will lead the party out of the valley of despair in the next years.”

At 72 years old, Kubicki believes he is no longer the suitable person to give the FDP a new profile, according to his statement. This announcement comes after the FDP’s chairman, Christian Lindner, had previously announced that he would step back from politics if the party fails to clear the five percent threshold.
