RB Leipzig and 1. FC Heidenheim played out a 2-2 draw at home in the 23rd round of the German Bundesliga. The Saxons were caught off guard by the aggressive visitors and fell behind early on. Following a free kick, RB Leipzig failed to clear the ball and Honsak’s powerful shot from 18 meters found the net in the seventh minute, leaving the home team looking disorganized and conceding a second goal in the 13th minute. After a foul by Orban on Pieringer in the 16th minute, the latter took the penalty kick and converted it successfully.
RB Leipzig’s first shot on target came in the 33rd minute, with Müller scoring from a sharp angle and Sesko’s long-range shot in the 41st minute was also saved by the visiting goalkeeper. The home team, however, played much too aimlessly and deservedly trailed 0-2 at halftime.
In the second half, the home team found its rhythm again and equalized in the 64th minute, as Siersleben collided with Openda in the penalty area and Sesko converted the resulting penalty kick.
The Schmidt team then gained momentum, with RB Leipzig pushing hard for a winner. In the 88th minute, Seiwald’s clever pass found Xavi, who, however, missed the target from a sharp angle and the match ended in a draw.
Leipzig now sits in sixth place in the table, while Heidenheim managed to collect a point in the relegation battle, temporarily holding onto 16th place, with Bochum likely to pick up two more points.
