Has the US Betrayed Ukraine?

A German politician, Robert Habeck of the Green Party, has strongly condemned the statement made by US President Donald Trump, labeling the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator”. In an interview with RTL and ntv, Habeck described the statement as having an Orwellian quality, where truth, lie and lie become one. He emphasized that Ukraine is an invaded country, with Russia as the aggressor.

Habeck called for the European Union to become more action-capable and to swiftly create a support package for Ukraine. He urged the establishment of decision-making structures that can act without bureaucracy. The politician criticized Trump’s actions as betrayal, stating that it is not possible to describe it in any other way.

Habeck does not consider a European army to be a current priority, instead advocating for a European financing of support for Ukraine and military expenses, which would also facilitate cooperation and reduce costs. He pointed out the current fragmentation of European defense industries, with 27 different armies and industries in Europe, describing this as too expensive.

According to Habeck, a European reform agenda is urgently needed to facilitate faster and more decisive decision-making. He emphasized that national states must be prepared to transfer competencies to the European level.
