German Tourism Industry Struggles to Recover from the Shadows of the Pandemic

The German hospitality industry recorded a real decline of 2.6 percent and a nominal increase of 0.6 percent in turnover in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to preliminary results published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Thursday.

The preliminary annual result is lower than the forecast published on January 21, which already took into account the expected late reports. Compared to the pre-Corona year of 2019, the real turnover of the hospitality industry in 2024 was 13.1 percent lower, while the nominal turnover was 9.9 percent higher.

The accommodation sector saw a real decline of 0.4 percent and a nominal increase of 2.4 percent in turnover in 2024 compared to 2023. As a result, the real turnover in 2024 was 4.9 percent lower than in 2019, while the nominal turnover was 15.6 percent higher. In the gastronomy sector, turnover decreased by 3.8 percent in real terms and 0.5 percent in nominal terms in 2024 compared to 2023. This means that the turnover was 15.8 percent lower in real terms and 8.9 percent higher in nominal terms than in 2019.

In December 2024, the hospitality industry recorded a real decline of 2.6 percent and a nominal decline of 2.2 percent in turnover compared to November, according to preliminary results. Compared to December 2023, the turnover decreased by 3.0 percent in real terms and 0.2 percent in nominal terms. As a result, the real turnover in December 2024 was 16.6 percent lower than in December 2019, the comparison month before the Corona pandemic, while the nominal turnover was 5.6 percent higher.

Hotels and other accommodation establishments saw a decline of 1.8 percent in real terms and 0.7 percent in nominal terms in December compared to November. Compared to December 2023, the real turnover decreased by 0.2 percent, while the nominal turnover increased by 1.9 percent. In comparison to December 2019, the turnover was 5.8 percent lower in real terms and 14.2 percent higher in nominal terms.

In the gastronomy sector, the turnover decreased by 3.1 percent in real terms and 2.9 percent in nominal terms in December compared to the previous month. Compared to December 2023, the turnover decreased by 4.6 percent in real terms and 1.1 percent in nominal terms. In comparison to December 2019, the turnover was 20.5 percent lower in real terms and 3.6 percent higher in nominal terms.
