A US Umbrella Needed to Stay Safe

A political scientist from the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich, Carlo Masala, believes that the deployment of European peacekeeping troops to Ukraine is only viable with the assurance of the US. “Before European peacekeeping troops are sent to Ukraine, the Americans should provide a security guarantee in the event of an attack, perhaps with the use of long-range missiles that can target Russian sites from outside” he told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (Tuesday edition). “Otherwise, I don’t see many Europeans sending these troops. The risk is simply too great.”

Masala added, “Without such a security guarantee from the Americans and European peacekeeping troops, there would be no security guarantees for Ukraine. As the new Trump administration has ruled out Ukraine’s NATO membership and the deployment of its own peacekeeping troops.”

In any case, the Europeans should “now take massive money into hand to secure the military and humanitarian support for Ukraine. Moreover, they should examine Donald Trump’s offer to sell and give American weapons to Ukraine and if it still stands, accept the offer.”

Looking at the overall security of Europe, the political scientist said the Europeans must “develop a plan to fill the conventional gaps left by the Americans. As the US security guarantee for Europe still stands in a nuclear sense, but not in a conventional one. Europe must fill these gaps in the face of Russian rearmament and quickly – in the next four years, to be precise.
