In a recent parliamentary debate, Sahra Wagenknecht, the chair of the Left Party (Die Linke), criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his unclear stance on the potential deployment of a peacekeeping force in Ukraine. Wagenknecht accused Scholz of being “history-forgetting” for not ruling out the possibility of sending German Bundeswehr soldiers to Ukraine. She emphasized that the Ukraine needs security guarantees, but from neutral powers, not from Germany, which would be an affront to Russia.
Wagenknecht also took aim at the idea of the US President, Donald Trump, passing on the costs of Ukraine’s reconstruction to Germany and Europe, stating that a future German government must reject such plans. Notably, she lamented the European Union’s lack of initiative in the conflict, saying that since the war’s beginning, not a single independent peace initiative has been launched from the European side.
