The recent Munich Security Conference was “in a certain sense a European dream, but at the same time, it was a very clarifying conference” said the conference leader, Christoph Heusgen, to the ZDF’s “Heute-Journal”.
It showed that “this America under Trump lives on a different star” Heusgen said. “We also noticed that even Republican senators are very cautious in making public statements because they are afraid of their president.”
In the event of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, Europe must “stand together. We must show a lot more strength” Heusgen said, adding that Europe should not only sit at the negotiating table but develop its own security plan for Ukraine. A possible axis of autocrats, the US, China and Russia, poses “a very great danger” according to Christoph Heusgen.
Looking at Germany and Europe, he said, “Democrats must hold together and cannot afford to waste time in long coalition negotiations, but we must find a rapid response to the questions we are facing.
