After the alleged attack in Munich, the chairman of the Police Union (GdP), Jochen Kopelke, expects stricter security measures for carnival parades.
“After such an act, the police in the states will prepare differently for carnival” Kopelke said to the Funke Media Group’s Friday editions. “There will be a nationwide tightening of security measures.”
Attacks should not, however, lead to the damage of “our freedom, our celebrations, our traditions.” One should still be able to go to carnival, to football, to demonstrations, or election campaign events. What is needed is more personnel on duty, more video surveillance and more technical barriers, so that cars cannot even get close to gatherings, Kopelke demanded. “The German Bundestag should have passed the necessary laws this week” he added.
