In a recent interview, Saxony’s Minister-President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) called for the next federal government to allocate important cabinet positions to politicians from the eastern states. “I hope that personalities from the new states will sit at the cabinet table. And not just in a ministry that’s a token gesture, but one that can really shape the future of the country, for example in the transport or science ministry” Kretschmer told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. “That would be a genuine contribution to give a second push to the reconstruction of the East.”
The Minister-President made it clear that he is not a candidate for such a position, stating, “I was already in Berlin for 15 years and I’m closing the door on a return. Not just for the time being, but in total” he said. “My time in Berlin was long, intense and it’s over. My task lies in Saxony.
