The CDU’s Chancellor candidate, Friedrich Merz, plans to form a government within two months of his election victory. “I hope that the government formation will be completed by Easter” he told the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers in a weekend edition interview.
Merz described his ambition as “ambitious” but emphasized that “at the latest by the summer break, we need to make a few decisions that will have a tangible and psychological impact on companies, showing that the framework conditions in Germany will improve.” Stopping the “bleeding of investment capital and jobs” is crucial, he added.
Merz highlighted three key proposals from the Union’s 15-point immediate program, which he considers particularly important: limiting illegal migration, introducing an active retirement system and reducing electricity prices by lowering the electricity tax and network charges.
