Why the Slow Adoption of EVs in the Land of Luxury?

Electric Cars Remain a Niche Product in Germany. Figures from the HUK Coburg insurance company, reported by the “Sunday World”, show this.

According to the analysis, electric cars make up only three percent of all private passenger cars in the country. Bavaria leads the way with 3.5 percent, followed by Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony, each with 3.3 percent. Saxony has the lowest percentage, at 1.6 percent.

Unlike the registration statistics of the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, the HUK data is based on the insurance contracts of private individuals. Approximately one in four privately owned cars is insured with HUK. The figures also show that last year, not even four percent of drivers switched from a combustion engine to an electric car. The most frequent switchers were found in Lower Saxony and Bavaria, at 4.5 percent each. The lowest percentage was in Saxony, at 2.1 percent, with an average of 3.9 percent across the country.

The use of electric cars, according to the insurance data, is also strongly linked to charging options. For example, the percentage of electric cars among homeowners is 4.3 percent, while apartment owners have a 2.5 percent share and private cars of renters have only a 1.3 percent share of electric powertrains.
