2.9% Surge in December, a Game-Changer for the Economy?

Germany’s exports rose by 2.9 percent in December 2024 compared to the previous month, while imports increased by 2.1 percent, according to preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Exports grew by 3.4 percent in December 2024 compared to the same month the previous year, while imports rose by 4.5 percent.

The country’s trade balance showed a surplus of 20.7 billion euros in December 2024, compared to a surplus of 19.2 billion euros in November 2024 and 21.1 billion euros in December 2023.

Germany’s exports to the European Union (EU) rose by 5.9 percent in December 2024, with a value of 72.4 billion euros, while imports from the EU increased by 3.6 percent, with a value of 57 billion euros. The country’s exports to the EU’s non-eurozone countries grew by 3.9 percent, while imports from these countries rose by 2.9 percent.

Germany’s exports to non-EU countries, including the United States, China and the United Kingdom, were worth 59.3 billion euros in December 2024, a 0.5 percent decrease from the previous month. The country’s imports from non-EU countries, including the United States, China and the United Kingdom, were worth 54.1 billion euros, a 0.5 percent increase from the previous month.

Germany’s exports to the United States decreased by 3.5 percent in December 2024, while exports to China and the United Kingdom increased by 1.4 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively. Germany’s imports from China and the United Kingdom decreased by 1 percent and 3 percent, respectively, in December 2024.

The country’s exports to Russia decreased by 19.9 percent in December 2024, while imports from Russia increased by 14.4 percent.

Germany’s nominal exports and imports, not adjusted for seasonal and calendar variations, were 113.9 billion euros and 99.9 billion euros, respectively, in December 2024. The country’s unadjusted trade balance showed a surplus of 14 billion euros in December 2024.

In 2024, Germany’s exports and imports, not adjusted for seasonal and calendar variations, were 1,555.4 billion euros and 1,316.3 billion euros, respectively, resulting in a trade surplus of 239.1 billion euros. In 2023, the country’s trade surplus was 217.7 billion euros.
