'Central Argument' Lost in the Fray?

Bonn political scientist Frank Decker sees the FDP’s re-entry into the Bundestag after its voting behavior on migration policy with numerous defectors as endangered. “The FDP has thus revealed its fragmentation. The lack of inner-party cohesion is, however, a poison in the already difficult election campaign” said Decker to the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition).

“The prospects for re-entry into the Bundestag are rather poor, because a central argument is missing, to vote for the FDP: namely, their need as a coalition partner” said the party researcher. “Those who share the party’s economic and migration-skeptical positions could safely opt for the Union instead, because they risk wasting their vote otherwise” said Decker. For the migration plans of FDP and Union are similar.

Regarding the discussion about the future of FDP chief Christian Lindner, Decker said: “There is already a latent dissatisfaction with Lindner. It will, however, only become a manifest dissatisfaction after the election, if the party fails to enter the Bundestag.
