In the wake of the joint voting by the Union with the AfD in the German Bundestag, both the SPD and the Greens in Hamburg have effectively ruled out a coalition with the party at the state level. This alignment raises questions about the credibility of the party, said Hamburg’s First Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) at the “Wahl-Triell” event hosted by RTL Nord.
“Mister Merz has undoubtedly broken his word” Tschentscher said. “We have a CDU that is not recognizable to me.” “I genuinely lack the imagination to form a coalition with the CDU” said also the Greens’ top candidate, Katharina Fegebank.
In contrast, CDU top candidate Dennis Thering (CDU) sees cooperation with the Hamburg Greens as unimaginable. He identifies potential areas of overlap with the SPD, such as infrastructure or security policy. Moreover, he reaffirmed the Hamburg CDU’s stance on the AfD, stating, “There was no cooperation. There will be no cooperation with the AfD in the future, in no way whatsoever.
