A plan to introduce an electronic ankle bracelet for perpetrators of violence against women, modeled after the “Spanish system”, has been announced by the Union party. According to the party’s paper, the system would track the offender’s location using GPS-enabled technology and alert the victim through a responder app when the perpetrator approaches. The Union claims that neighboring countries have had positive experiences with this instrument, as it has led to perpetrators better adhering to restraining orders issued to their former partners.
The party’s analysis also references the current police crime statistics and the situation regarding domestic violence. According to the statistics, in 2023, 256,000 people, mostly women, were victims of domestic violence. Furthermore, the Union reports that 155 women and 24 men were killed by their partners or ex-partners in 2023.
The CDU has adopted a 15-point emergency program at its party convention, which the party aims to implement quickly in government. The introduction of the electronic ankle bracelet is part of this program, which emphasizes the need to stop perpetrators of violence against women.
