Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has ordered a state funeral in memory of the late former Federal President Horst Köhler. The Federal President’s Office announced this on Tuesday.
The date of the state funeral remains unclear for the time being. Further details on the state funeral, which will be conducted by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, will be reported soon, it was stated.
Köhler passed away on Saturday at the age of 81. He was elected to the highest office of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2004. In 2010, he resigned in a dispute over his comments on the deployment of the German military abroad. Prior to his presidency, he served as the acting director of the International Monetary Fund.
