German industrialist and former FC Bayern manager Uli Hoeneß believes a turning point is imminent in Germany following the Bundestag election. “I expect a significant shift in our country, really decisive decisions” he told the T-Online news portal. “It will hopefully be a completely new era in German politics.” He did not mean the far-right AfD, however.
For Hoeneß, it is crucial that politicians can no longer develop in a way that is reminiscent of the past. “You can’t just lean out the window anymore, because you’ll get taken to task too quickly. And social media, in my opinion, is ruining everything” he said.
The former manager is thinking of politicians like Olaf Scholz, Robert Habeck and Markus Söder, who he believes are constantly being criticized for their mistakes. “They won’t have a chance to develop the way former political giants like Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl, Franz-Josef Strauß, or even Angela Merkel could have” he said.
In general, Hoeneß is looking at the future with concern. “I have much more fear of war and unbridled violence than the question of what FC Bayern will be like in 25 years” he said. “Nobody knows how the wars and conflicts in Ukraine or the Middle East will end. For everything that concerns our future, the key is lasting peace. You can’t see sport in isolation from that.
