In a recent interview, Terry Reintke, the co-leader of the Green group in the European Parliament, urged Union’s chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz to make a “clear statement”.
Reintke told Politico that “cooperation with extreme right groups cannot stand as it is”. She is waiting for a clear declaration from Merz and the Union that the recent controversy was a mistake that will not be repeated.
According to Reintke, without such clarity, it will be very difficult for Merz to form a government after the election. She criticized the “blackmail and ‘basta’ politics” as not being suitable for democrats and poisoning any form of democratic cooperation.
Merz’s actions last week were deemed “unworthy of a chancellor” by Reintke. She emphasized that someone who wants to take responsibility in the country must clearly state that they will not share power with those who undermine the constitution.
