The protests against right-wing extremism and the joint decisions of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group with the AfD are expected to continue until the federal election on February 23.
“The protest wave will continue until the federal election” said Campact chairman Christoph Bautz to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. The campaign organization is supporting demonstrations across the country, also financially. “In the last year, we had a budget of 27 million euros” said Bautz about the financial strength of Campact.
The goal of the support is, among other things, to reach former Merkel voters. Additionally, Campact wants to weaken Friedrich Merz as the CDU’s chancellor candidate and strengthen the liberals within the party. “Some CDU members were with us on the streets” said Bautz.
The activist Carla Reemtsma, known from “Fridays For Future” describes the current protest wave as “an appeal to the Union”: “A joint decision with the AfD like on Wednesday must never happen again” said Reemtsma as a spokesperson for the alliance “Together against the right” and the climate movement “Fridays For Future.
