German article about a significant increase in crimes against public officials in Germany.
According to a preliminary analysis by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Left Party MP Martina Renner, reported by the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” news network, the number of crimes committed against public officials in Germany has significantly increased in the past year.
As of December 31, 2024, the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) recorded a total of 4,923 such crimes. In the same period of the previous year, the BKA had registered 4,047 crimes against public officials, a rise of over 20 percent.
Although the police of the federal states still have until the end of January to report additional crimes from the previous year to the BKA, the preliminary figure is likely to increase further. The official number for 2023, which includes crimes reported after the December 31 deadline, has already risen by over 1,300 to around 5,400.
According to the preliminary analysis, the number of violent crimes against public officials also increased, albeit slightly, from 94 in 2023 to 99. The majority of the crimes took place in the states of Bavaria (747), Baden-Württemberg (633), North Rhine-Westphalia (540) and Berlin (533).
Left Party MP and Interior Policy Expert Martina Renner said to the RND: “Permanent incitement against democratic institutions, as seen in the recent marking of CDU/FDP MPs as dissidents with a photo in the style of anti-Antifa, fuels a broad wave of attacks on public officials.” With a view to the recent numbers, she added: “With one violent attack every four days and an overall increase of a fifth of crimes, it is clear that confrontation is often the sought-after goal.
