German Politician Warns of Deteriorating Dialogue Amid Migration Policy Debate
The deputy chairman of the Christian Democratic Union, Karl-Josef Laumann, has expressed concern that the ongoing debate over Germany’s migration policy may lead to a breakdown in dialogue among the country’s political center parties.
In an interview with the Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung, Laumann emphasized the need for a societal consensus on the issue, stating that he is convinced the answers will be found in the democratic middle ground. He expressed disappointment that this was not possible last week, but hopes the current debate will achieve a breakthrough.
As a minister in the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, Laumann emphasized the importance of maintaining the dialogue in this critical time, citing his Christian democratic values.
When asked about the content of the proposed exchange, Laumann clarified that a limitation of illegal migration is necessary, but also emphasized the need for a welcoming country that can absorb foreign workers, such as caregivers, who are essential to the current workforce. He stressed that the country’s openness is not dependent on a person’s country of origin, citing the example of foreign caregivers who are crucial to the healthcare system.
