BREAKING: Germany's Churches on Brink of Bankruptcy as Demands Rise and Funds Dry Up!

The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) is facing a precarious financial situation, according to Kirsten Fehrs, the president of the EKD. “The requirements are growing, while financial resources are decreasing” she described the situation in an interview with the German magazine Focus.

Fehrs emphasized that the church is currently undergoing a process of reevaluation, in which the importance of various tasks is being reassessed. “We want to remain an open, flexible and modern church, even with fewer resources” she stated.

The EKD’s membership numbers have been declining, with approximately 18.6 million members reported at the beginning of last year. The latest figures are not yet available, but it is likely that a significant number of members have left the church. Fehrs attributed the decline in part to the church tax, which many people do not perceive as a necessary contribution. “Many do not see what this solidarity tax makes possible in the first place” she said.

Old cases of abuse have also played a role in the church’s decline, according to Fehrs. “We have recently adopted a comprehensive plan for the EKD, in collaboration with those affected, to address the issue of abuse and prevention.” Fehrs expressed gratitude for the involvement of the affected individuals, who are essential in helping the church understand how to develop effective protection concepts that truly protect.
