Bundestag Rejects Asylum Cap, Merkel's Plan Fails Despite AfD Support

In the vote on the migration law proposed by CDU’s Friedrich Merz, a narrow majority of Bundestag members rejected the bill, marking a significant defeat for the Red-Green coalition.

Prior to the vote, FDP’s Wolfgang Kubicki had assured in his speech that his party would support the proposal. The AfD also voted in favor of the bill, which was introduced by the CDU. Sahra Wagenknecht of the BSW signalled that her party would also vote in favor.

The debate preceding the vote was emotionally charged. While the majority of speeches focused on the migration issue, the real point of contention was the question of border control. The majority of the opposition, including the Greens and the SPD, viewed the bill’s acceptance with the support of the AfD as a breach of taboos.
