In the vote on the migration law proposed by CDU’s Friedrich Merz, a narrow majority of Bundestag members rejected the bill, marking a significant defeat for the Red-Green coalition.
Prior to the vote, FDP’s Wolfgang Kubicki had already assured in his speech that his faction would support the proposal. The AfD also voted in favor of the bill, which was introduced by the CDU. Sahra Wagenknecht of the BSW signalled in her speech that her party would also support the bill.
The debate preceding the vote was emotional, with the majority of speeches focusing not on the immigration issue, but rather on the question of the “brand wall”. The fact that a bill on migration control was accepted with the votes of the AfD is seen by the Greens and the SPD as a taboo-breaking move.
