In a surprising turn of events, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, a member of the Greens, has expressed a willingness to engage in talks with the Union on the topic of migration. “You can already have a good conversation if you want to” Habeck said in an interview with RTL/ntv, referencing the approximately 20 laws passed in recent weeks. However, he criticized Union leader Friedrich Merz for creating a situation that is “not acceptable” and “can be exploited by the AfD, making democracy pressurable.”
When asked if the Greens could, under any circumstances, support the Union’s “Zustrombegrenzungsgesetz” on Friday, Habeck replied, “No, we cannot do that because the situation that has been created is an extortion situation. Either you agree with us, or I will agree with the AfD.”
The fact that former Chancellor Angela Merkel intervened in the debate on Thursday, criticizing CDU party leader Merz, is seen as a signal by Habeck. “And that the former Chancellor, who has long kept out of everything, now speaks out, is certainly no coincidence. She must be concerned, just like we are, that things are now taking a wrong turn” the Green party leader said. “So, a hat tip to Angela Merkel and thank you for the straightforwardness and steadfastness.
