Former CDU Member Michel Friedman to Leave the Party

In an interview with the Hessian Broadcast Corporation (hr) on Thursday, Michel Friedman announced that he will be leaving the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Friedman justified his decision by citing the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s vote in the German Bundestag to strengthen asylum laws with the support of the Alternative for Germany (AfD). He described this move as a “catastrophic turning point for the democracy of the Federal Republic of Germany” and an “unpardonable power play.”

Friedman, a former member of the CDU’s federal executive board, recently made a statement at an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, saying, “We are witnessing that anti-Semitism has become socially acceptable. Hatred of humanity has become socially acceptable.” He also noted that “there is a political party that wants to destroy the European Union and within the European Union, there are extremist right-wing parties that are already doing so.
