Asylum Reforms Pass with AfD's Help, Sparking a National Crisis

After a two-hour debate, with at times heated exchanges, in the German Bundestag, it has been confirmed that Friedrich Merz’s proposal to amend the asylum and migration policies has been approved.

In the first roll-call vote, a total of 703 votes were cast, with 348 in favor and 345 against, effectively passing the motion.

A second roll-call vote, however, failed to pass, with 190 votes in favor and 509 against, out of a total of 702 cast ballots.

The SPD’s faction leader requested a suspension of the session, prompting Friedrich Merz to call for the observance of democratic rules. Merz expressed regret over the new majority and extended an offer for the SPD to reconsider cooperation by the following Friday.
