In the face of the debate about stricter asylum laws and the possibility of the AfD’s approval of CDU/CSU draft bills, the Green politician Anton Hofreiter has lost trust in the Union. “This is madness, what the CDU is doing” Hofreiter told the Bild (Thursday edition).
He questioned how one could still believe in the party. “That changes everything for us” Hofreiter said. “The mood is catastrophic.”
He had “always defended the CDU and said that they wouldn’t make common cause with the right-wing extremists of the AfD” the Green politician said. “And now they want to do that. I wouldn’t have thought that until Friday.”
In his response to the government’s declaration after the collapse of the coalition in November, the CDU’s faction leader Friedrich Merz had explained that he wanted to prevent a situation where “even just once a random or actually engineered majority comes together with those on the AfD’s right.” Because “these ladies and gentlemen on the right would like it if they suddenly secured the majorities.
