BREAKING: German Parliament to Pass Landmark Law Protecting Mothers After Miscarriages in Historic Vote!

In a rare display of cross-party cooperation, the German Bundestag is set to pass a new regulation on maternal protection in cases of miscarriage this week. Two draft bills, one from the CDU/CSU and the other from the SPD and the Greens, had been laid before the parliament, both aiming to address the same issue and differing only slightly.

According to a joint statement from the SPD, the Greens and the CDU/CSU, the draft bill from the Union will be adopted. The new law aims to fill a protection gap, as women who had a miscarriage before the 24th week of pregnancy had to actively seek a sick leave, often without guarantee of its approval. The planned tiered system of maternal protection, starting from the 13th week of pregnancy, is intended to better account for the physical and emotional burdens faced by women in such situations.

“This joint initiative from the parliamentary center is a good day for women’s rights and a strong signal for our democratic culture – it shows that cross-party cooperation can achieve something good” said Sarah Lahrkamp, a member of the Family Committee and the SPD’s Family Commissioner, on Wednesday.
