German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has warned the Union against a potential hardening of the country’s migration policy in collaboration with the AfD party.
Faeser, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), urged the Union to abandon its “dangerous national detour” that could only be achieved with the support of the AfD. “We should quickly leave this path and instead pass laws from the democratic center that strengthen our security and further reduce irregular migration” she said in an interview with the Funke Media Group’s Wednesday editions.
Faeser referred to the European asylum reform, stating that it would achieve strict control and asylum procedures at the EU’s external borders, thereby preventing people without a prospect of staying from reaching Germany in the first place. She also mentioned the new Federal Police Law and the allocation of more powers to security authorities, saying that these laws could be passed without the need for cooperation with the AfD.
