Berlin, Germany – The leader of the Left, Sahra Wagenknecht, views the debate surrounding a potential cooperation between the Union and the AfD as a sham discussion. “It’s actually being discussed over false questions” she said in Berlin on Tuesday. The debate about the Brandenburg Gate is a “laughable topic” and diverts attention from the “real problems” she added.
Government parties have been refusing to achieve a “reasonable reduction in refugee numbers” for years, said Wagenknecht. A “failed migration policy” is one of the main drivers of the high popularity ratings for the AfD.
Wagenknecht criticized the CDU leader, Friedrich Merz, for not approaching the Left to discuss his plans. “We are not his ‘maneuverable voting cattle’ that helps him achieve majorities” she said. Merz’s proposals are “to a significant extent symbolic politics.”
Furthermore, Wagenknecht warned of an “abuse of the situation to establish a massive surveillance state in Germany, primarily affecting normal citizens rather than the number of migrants.” She also cautioned against an “surveillance state.” The proposed controls along the entire border are “not feasible” Wagenknecht said, adding that, as of now, she does not expect to agree with the proposals.
