The Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has announced his intention to introduce a constitutional amendment that recognizes only two genders: male and female. Fico stated, “I’ve come up with an initiative to include a provision in the constitution that says Slovakia only accepts two genders – the male and the female. President Trump has done the same.”
Fico praised Trump’s approach on the issue, emphasizing, “Nobody will be a helicopter, a swan, a cat, or a bear – there will be a man or a woman.”He also suggested that the European Union could learn from Trump’s stance on illegal migration.
Currently, Slovakia recognizes the rights of transgender individuals, but the country has previously attempted to change the relevant laws. In 2023, a bill was proposed that would have made it impossible for transgender individuals to change their gender in official documents.
Same-sex couples in Slovakia are not allowed to marry or register their partnership.
In his inauguration speech on January 20, Trump announced that the official policy of the United States would be to recognize the existence of only two genders – male and female. The executive order, signed the same day, rejects the option of individuals changing their gender or perceiving themselves as something other than male or female, such as non-binary.
However, the media notes that the executive order is not yet in full effect, as a bill needs to be drafted for Congress to ratify the changes, which will take 30 days. The federal agencies have been given a 120-day deadline to report on their progress in implementing the order.
