A leading candidate for the German Greens, Robert Habeck, has expressed a hardline stance against the United States under Donald Trump. “The response to Donald Trump can only be a strong Europe now”he told the FAS (Saturday edition), adding, “and to stand firm.”In reference to the announced tariffs on European goods, Habeck said the EU is “prepared for a quid pro quo.”He characterized Trump’s inauguration by saying, “An authoritarian mindset has spread in the United States.”
Regarding the Union’s chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz’s demand for an immediate entry stop for asylum seekers, Habeck countered, saying that one must “hold to the Constitution and European law.”He further stated, “Germany cannot behave like Hungary and a federal chancellor cannot be like Viktor Orban.”It is essential to “keep a cool head.””And we must not believe that there is a panacea.
