A new, multibillion-dollar infrastructure project for artificial intelligence (AI) has been announced by US President Donald Trump, titled “Stargate”. The project aims to build massive data centers, Trump stated on Tuesday at the White House. Prior to the announcement, Trump had revoked a decree issued by his predecessor, Joe Biden, which aimed to prevent discrimination through AI applications and protect privacy.
The original investors in Stargate are the Japanese media conglomerate Softbank, AI developer OpenAI, software company Oracle, and MGX. Initially, the participating companies plan to invest 100 billion dollars in the project, with an additional 400 billion dollars to follow in the coming years. Softbank will take on financial responsibility, while OpenAI will handle operational duties. Arm and Nvidia, leading chip manufacturers and developers, as well as Microsoft, a software giant, have also joined the project as technology partners.
Trump emphasized that the project aims to keep the technology in the US, and he expects it to create 100,000 jobs. The President has declared the data center construction a national emergency, stating that it will be supported through emergency declarations.
