In a recent interview, Brandenburg’s SPD Interior Minister Katrin Lange (SPD) suggested that SPD Federal Chair Saskia Esken should refrain from participating in talk shows during the ongoing federal election campaign. This is not the first time Lange has made this demand, as she had previously called for certain individuals to no longer appear on talk shows.
Lange, who is also the SPD’s Vice State Chair, reiterated her stance, citing the importance of setting an example. She did, however, express her support for the SPD’s Chancellor candidate, Olaf Scholz, praising his measured approach to the issue of further weapons deliveries to Ukraine.
In light of the SPD’s poor poll numbers, Lange urged her party to adopt a stricter line in domestic policy, particularly on issues of migration, crime, and internal security. While the SPD has made some progress in these areas at the federal level, Lange believes that more is needed to win over voters.
She also cautioned against underestimating the CDU’s ability to stall progress, citing the 2021 federal election and the 2024 Brandenburg state election as examples of the CDU’s effectiveness in this regard.
