German Federal Party Chief Christian Lindner Criticizes Union and its Leading Candidate Friedrich Merz, Suggesting the Party Lacks a Clear Political Direction.
According to an interview with the “Frankfurter Rundschau” (Monday edition), Christian Lindner, the chief of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), has criticized the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its leading candidate Friedrich Merz, stating that the CDU does not currently embody a political shift because it is open to everything, including the possibility of a Green Party’s Robert Habeck as Economics Minister, who recently also demanded social concessions on their savings plan for shareholders. Lindner believes that the CDU would benefit just as much as the FDP if the CDU clearly declared its goal of a black-yellow coalition. He thinks the CDU’s wavering makes the party weaker.
The liberal party chief is convinced that his party will also be represented in the new German parliament, possibly even with a two-digit result. “We’re experiencing a momentum growth”, Lindner said, expressing his confidence in the party’s prospects. “We’re an end-sprint party”, he added, as many supporters of the FDP are currently hesitant. According to Lindner, if the party’s current support base of four in the polls increases to five, and then to six, this could quickly become eight, nine, or ten.
