CDU Leader to Seek Positive Lessons from a Second Trump Term?

In a recent interview with the German newspaper “Bild am Sonntag”, CDU’s Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz expressed a more positive outlook on the second term of US President Donald Trump, suggesting that a new chapter in European-American relations could be written. He proposed to Trump the idea of a new transatlantic free trade agreement, which would benefit both sides.

In a similar vein, FDP’s General Secretary Marco Buschmann emphasized the importance of economic growth in order to negotiate with Trump on equal terms. According to Buschmann, the German economy’s strength is the key to being taken seriously by Trump, who has no respect for the weak. He believes that Germany must regain its economic strength in order to be a significant player in international politics and to be able to negotiate effectively with the US President.
