Leftist Leader Slams Foam Cake Assault on FDP Chief

German politician Dietmar Bartsch has spoken out in favor of more fairness in the political competition and criticized an attack on FDP leader Christian Lindner with a foam pie by a Left party member.

“I don’t want to get hit in the face with a foam pie, nor do I want anyone else to. I think that’s not the way to do it, it’s a disregard for a person’s dignity” the former Bundestag faction leader of the Left party said to the Phoenix television station on Saturday at the Left party’s federal convention. One should engage argumentatively with the positions of other parties, not with physical attacks.

Bartsch is counting on the Left party being part of the next German federal parliament. With the “Mission Silver Lock” the candidacy of well-known Left party politicians Bodo Ramelow, Gregor Gysi, and Bartsch, the party aims to make itself electable from north to south. For these three direct mandates, there is a good chance. “There needs to be a strong opposition, a left voice. That’s our drive” he said.
