German Left Party Chief Warns of a Catastrophic Blow to the Social State under a Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU).
“It’s dark times ahead for us” she said on Saturday at the Left Party’s convention in Berlin. “Never has the Left been so important in this country.” Merz is working to “make this country a safe haven for capital and a social hell for working and poor people” the Left Party chief added. The CDU’s chancellor candidate would “crush the social state into pieces.”
This plan, according to Schwerdtner, would likely be implemented with the AfD, as well. In several European countries, conservatives “openly work with fascists” she said. From a conservative side, she is currently experiencing an “organized attack on the social state.” The Left Party, in response, would propose a nationwide rent cap and a reduction in living costs.
She is experiencing the party “as alive as never before” Schwerdtner added, referring to the 13,000 new members. Co-Chief Jan van Aken also highlighted the “vitality” of the Left Party.
The SPD and the Greens, van Aken criticized, only take up social issues in the election campaign, only to forget them in government responsibility. Schwerdtner criticized that these parties only offer themselves as junior partners to the Union. According to van Aken, the Greens often forget social questions in their politics. “That’s why the Greens have messed up the climate issue” he said.
He explicitly distanced himself from the BSW in the Ukraine policy, stating that while they are a peace party, there can be no peace without freedom and democracy. He further demanded that “all war criminals like Putin, Erdogan, and Netanyahu” be brought to court.
