German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), believes it is possible that German soldiers could participate in securing a demilitarized zone in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.
“When the question arises, we will discuss it” Pistorius told the Süddeutsche Zeitung in an interview, in response to a question about the possibility. “We are the largest NATO partner in Europe, so it’s only logical that we will play a role, take responsibility.” The central question, he emphasized, is: “How can one achieve a level of security in Ukraine, so that Russia does not attack again a few years later?”
The minister had just returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he noted the current atmosphere of nervousness and uncertainty, particularly in light of the upcoming inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. “You can feel the tension, the uncertainty regarding what is happening in Washington right now” Pistorius said. Russia currently occupies around 18 or 19 percent of Ukraine’s territory.
Pistorius announced an imminent trip to the US to meet with the Trump administration, with the aim of discussing the situation with the new government. Although the candidate for US Defense Minister, Pete Hegseth, has not yet been confirmed, “we have an interest in meeting in Washington at the beginning of February and exchanging views” Pistorius said.
