The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has announced that it will once again support Syrian migrants who plan to return to their homeland permanently. According to an internal memo, Syria was added as a target country to the return program last week. Asylum seekers or those who are required to leave the country can apply for subsidized flights or other travel expenses at the BAMF, funded by the federal government and states.
Additionally, participants can receive a one-time support of up to 1,700 euros. The initial support is capped at a maximum of 4,000 euros per family. Furthermore, according to the program, medical services in Syria may be provided, with a maximum of 2,000 euros per person, which can be claimed within the first three months of arrival.
The funding for Syrian returnees has not been possible since 2012, as the country was considered too dangerous due to the ongoing civil war. The BAMF has previously only provided partial cost reimbursement to states through its own return programs.
