In a recent interview with the German TV channel “Welt”, the Chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU) and Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder praised the political style of the upcoming US President, Donald Trump. Söder attributed Trump’s success to his unpredictability, citing the role the US President played in the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and the Hamas, as well as the trade dispute with China during his first term in office.
Söder recalled that the Chinese had been most afraid of Trump during the initial trade dispute, as he had effectively put pressure on them. However, when it comes to the German-American relationship, Söder expects challenging times ahead, stating that the distance to Europe, particularly Germany, is palpable. In the face of a poor economic situation, Söder believes that Germany is “absolutely on the wrong foot”.
