The FDP lost about every 20th member last year. As of the year’s turn in 2024/25, the Free Democrats had a total of 68,170 members, according to the “Tagesspiegel” (Friday edition) citing party statements.
The decline in membership corresponds to a loss of 5.1 percent. At the end of 2023, the FDP still had 71,817 members. The FDP headquarters told the “Tagesspiegel” that while the party lost members during the final phase of the government coalition, this had been reversed since the end of the coalition in November 2024.
The CDU had a total of 364,200 members in December 2024, according to the “Tagesspiegel” citing the party. This represents a slight increase of 0.3 percent. In December 2023, the CDU had 363,101 members.
The SPD, Greens, and AfD have not yet announced their membership numbers as of December 31, 2024. Analyses of the first months of the previous year suggest that the Greens and AfD were able to increase their membership, while the SPD lost members in the balance. “Due to the advance of the federal election, the creation of the membership report before the election day is not possible” a SPD spokesperson told the “Tagesspiegel”. The SPD cannot also “name a publication date”.
The AfD had a total of 39,738 members on January 1, 2024. It registered 9,256 new members in the first nine months of the previous year.
