BREAKING: FDP Seizes the Moment, Forces Emergency Budget Session on Ukraine Aid

In a move aimed at facilitating a decision on planned military aid to Ukraine, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) has called for a special session of the German Bundestag’s Budget Committee, according to a letter from the party’s faction leader, Johannes Vogel, to Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD), as reported by Politico.

“A special session is necessary to quickly reassert our continuous support to Ukraine in its difficult situation” Vogel wrote. The special session of the Budget Committee is scheduled to take place next Tuesday, during which a corresponding bill from the government, authorizing an unplanned expenditure of up to three billion euros in support of Ukraine, is expected to be passed.

“It would not benefit Ukraine if more commitments only become possible with the next budget, at the earliest in the summer” said Otto Fricke, the FDP’s budget spokesperson, to Politico. “Moreover, our support for Ukraine should not be a campaign issue.
