German Chancellor Candidate Friedrich Merz Defends Himself Against Criticism of Being Against the Transition to Green Steel
During a debate on the future of Germany’s steel industry, Friedrich Merz, the CDU’s candidate for Chancellor, defended himself against accusations that he is opposed to the transition to green steel. “If people had listened carefully to my speech at the Bochum plant council conference yesterday, there would have been no reason for any criticism” Merz said during a visit to the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) on Wednesday afternoon. “I have explicitly and clearly expressed my commitment to the steel industry in Germany.”
It would be a “fatal mistake” to abandon the steel industry in Germany, Merz emphasized. “However, I have expressed my skepticism about the rapid transition to green steel, especially if the current framework conditions remain the same.” For instance, if only green hydrogen is allowed, it would be a major obstacle. Instead, Merz believes that gas power plants should be built quickly. “Not a single one is currently under construction, none have been approved, and none are planned, despite being planned for this legislative period” he added.
“Under my leadership, we will not step back anywhere in Germany until we know exactly where we will be stepping forward” Merz continued. “We have often stepped back in this country. We must now take a step forward, and we cannot afford to shut down industrial facilities or power plants without knowing what will take their place.
