A German parliamentary faction has urged the deployment of unarmed drones to protect hybrid infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
According to the defense policy spokesperson of the faction in the Bundestag, Florian Hahn of the Christian Social Union, “the monitoring of large areas and critical infrastructure, such as the Baltic Sea, must be able to take place effortlessly and around the clock today.” Hahn told the Rheinische Post, “backed by sensors in space but especially by the use of unmanned systems, in conjunction with artificial intelligence, a monitoring can be ensured relatively resource-efficiently today.”
The government is allegedly lagging behind on these trends. “The drone army we are demanding could also support here: through drones in the air or at sea, a precise situation report can be created over long distances, and large areas with critical infrastructure can be monitored” Hahn said. The necessary system is already in the possession of the German Armed Forces, Hahn added. “So far, Defense Minister Pistorius has not taken any steps to deploy it” Hahn stated.
