Former SPD Chief Franz Müntefering has urged his party not to let the Chancellor slip away in the election campaign. According to Müntefering, in an interview with the “Stern”, the mood should not be turned solely by him, but rather by all in the SPD.
He emphasized that everyone in the party should contribute to the effort. “I can only say: Some in the CDU are rejoicing a bit too early” he stated.
Müntefering expressed skepticism about a junior partnership in a grand coalition, stating, “But one must genuinely want to govern. Not just complain, but govern: That is what matters.”
The former SPD leader will mark his 85th birthday on Thursday in a low-key celebration, saying, “I won’t make a big fuss. I’ll only really celebrate when I turn 100” he said. The day will be “business as usual”, the social democrat noted, “Get up, do some morning exercise, do a few knee bends. Nothing grand, but I do want to stay fit” he added. “I celebrate with my life. I was severely ill, but now I’m doing well again, and for that, I am grateful.
