German Free Democratic Party (FDP) leader Christian Lindner has expressed the possibility of introducing a new category of dangerous individuals following the Christmas market attack in Magdeburg.
“It could be a consequence” Lindner told the Bayern media group. He emphasized that the current focus on left- and right-wing extremism, as well as Islamism, may not be sufficient. “The authorities’ leadership must examine whether the existing frameworks are sufficient or need to be adjusted” he said.
Lindner’s comments come as the profile of the suspected Magdeburg attacker cannot be captured by existing categories. He also highlighted general problems with the cooperation between authorities. “Security does not only depend on legislative powers, but also on the functioning cooperation of the authorities” Lindner said. “The Magdeburg case shows that there are deficits in this area. Furthermore, there often lack police officers on the ground to strengthen the sense of security among citizens.
